    Responsibilities

    Medical Lab Technician - One (1) Full-Time 8-Hour 2nd Shift (2pm-10:30pm) Position Available

     

    Position Overview:

    Performs clinical laboratory procedures within the scope of their license in assigned sections.

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

    1. Performs all automated hematology, coagulation, microbiology, urinalysis and chemistry waived and moderately complex procedures within the scope of the MLT license. Assists in Blood Bank duties within the scope of the MLT license.  Responsible for prompt and accurate performance and reporting of all work assigned within established turn-around times.  Demonstrates the ability to work well in high volume and STAT conditions.
    2. To ensure high-quality patient care, confirms that quality control and calibration criteria are met before results are verified. Follows quality control out of range protocol and documents obtained values including proper explanations and corrective actions taken.  Performs instrument maintenance as required in assigned work areas.  Documents equipment malfunctions including remedial procedures taken and notifies supervisory and other personnel as appropriate.  Actively participates in proficiency testing programs that contribute to high quality laboratory results.
    3. Recognizes erroneous, inconsistent, redundant or questionable specimens and/or results and promptly takes corrective action or seeks assistance from supervisory personnel or pathologist as appropriate. Appropriately documents actions taken.  Effectively deals with peers and hospital personnel.
    4. Oversees work performed by non-licensed personnel, providing direction and technical assistance as needed. Assists in phlebotomy duties as necessary and/or obtaining all required specimens from inpatients and outpatients of all ages. Maintains strict patient confidentiality and recognizes age-specific criteria.
    5. Demonstrates ability to use independent judgement, but recognizes limits of own knowledge and experience and defers to CLS staff when appropriate. Is able to perform infrequent tests by utilizing procedure manuals.  Participates in performance improvement activities.

    Qualifications

    Required:

    • AA/AS in Medical Laboratory Technician program from a college or university.
    • Medical Laboratory Technician license from the State of CA

    Preferred:

    • Minimum of six months clinical laboratory experience preferred
